Optus | TV Now
What's not to like about a television-loving animated cheeky monkey? Creating this character for the latest Optus 'TV Now' commercial was too much fun and didn't seem like real work at all. Fuel collaborated with Ken Lambert, Sheepish Lion and M&C Saatchi, and presented several iterations of what this cheeky monkey-icon would look like, including approximately 100 facial expressions to demonstrate frustration, disappointment, excitement and satisfaction.
"Our Optus monkey loves digital media. He'll watch it anywhere, anytime and gets annoyed when he can't," said Fuel's VFX Supervisor Brian Kranz. "He lives in two worlds - the 2D t-shirt world where he behaves himself, and the 3D world where he is much cheekier. Our job was to integrate him between the worlds with characterization, expression and loads of personality."
The monkey was built in 3D. Two render passes were done, the first to animate the monkey in front of a t-shirt, and the second for the tracked and flattened monkey on the live action t-shirt. A final integration pass allowed Fuel artists to work the flattened monkey in with the natural folds and creases of the t-shirts as well as match the lighting, particularly the sheen on the fabrics at different times of day.
Our cheeky monkey features about 20 unique facial expressions in the final edit.
