Paul Butterworth, VFX Supervisor
Paul Butterworth is one of Australia's most experienced Visual Effects Supervisors. His talents extend to graphic design and illustration, visual effects, compositing, on-set effects supervision and the highly-specialised art of matte painting.
Paul works closely with Fuel's Design team to plan and develop concepts for characters, visual effects and title sequences. His artistic contributions have proven valuable for films which he has supervised including Prometheus, Thor, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Painted Veil.
Paul also has numerous commercial directing credits to his name most recently for campaigns for VW, Virgin and Visa. He is also a regular speaker on visual effects and design at conferences and festivals.
Andrew Hellen, General Manager | VFX Supervisor
Andrew Hellen was earning a living as an illustrator when the computer graphics industry was in it's infancy. Attracted by the challenge of the new field he trained himself in some of the earliest 3D packages and was part of the first wave of 3D artists working in Australia, and was a major contributor to much of Garner Maclennan Design's award-winning CG work during it's heyday in the 90s.
As one of Australia's most experienced 3D/VFX supervisors, Andrew has overseen large teams of artists and technicians in all facets of 3D computer-generated work, both for feature films such as Rogue and Iron Man 2, and on countless television commercials for a long list of top commercial directors and agencies.
In recent years, Andrew has assumed the role of General Manager to provide a focussed point of contact for our crew and the industry alike for all matters Fuel.
Simon Maddison, VFX Supervisor
Simon trained in fine arts and photography before making the transition early in his career to 3D animation. Now with more than 15 years experience spanning feature film, television series and commercials as a VFX Supervisor, Simon can take much of the credit for establishing Fuel as one of the country's leading 3D animation studios, with particular regard to photo-realistic character and FX animation.
With his strong technical knowledge and eye for a great shot, Simon has led teams of CG artists through the production and delivery of intensive sequences for films including The Avengers, Cowboys and Aliens, Bedtimes Stories, and Charlotte's Web but is equally at home delivery great effects work for commercials, where he's supervised campaigns for Gucci, Sony and McDonalds. He has also directs effects-driven commercials with Bankwest Squirrel, Optus Supersonic and V Grasshopper among his directing credits.
Dave Morley, VFX Supervisor
Dave specialised in 2D compositing for feature film in the early 90s at a time when digital compositing practices were still developing, the thought of 4K was terrifying and colour management science was a dark art. Think of an Australian feature film containing any significant visual effects from that era and Dave probably worked on it. His early career credits include Moulin Rouge, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Garage Days and a VFX Supervisor role on Danny Deckchair.
Further VFX Supervisor roles ensued on Australia, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Tree, and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, as well as looking after director Frank Miller's forays into international commercials with his Gucci Guilty campaigns. Dave was the recipient of the Best Visual Effects award at the Australian Film Institute awards in 2008 for Rogue, and was nominated again in 2010 for Tomorrow When The War Began.
Jonathan Hairman, VFX Supervisor | Senior Flame Artist
Jonathan has been in the Industry for over 18 years across a range of roles in film and television and joins Fuel as a VFX Supervisor and Lead Flame Artist of its advertising team. After 9 years at Framestore, London where he rose to being one of London’s top Commercials VFX Supervisors, Jonathan is back home in Sydney. Known for his distinctive eye for detail he has worked with many of the most prominent Directors including Martin Krejci, Tom Hooper, Johnny Green, Frank Budgen, Chris Palmer and Jonas Akerlund.
